President to Keep Meat-Processing Plants Open

His order will invoke the Defense Production Act.

On Sunday, Tyson Foods ran an ad in many national newspapers calling out the difficulty of producing meat while keeping more than 100,000 workers safe and shutting some plants. “This means one thing—the food supply chain is vulnerable,” the statement said. “As pork, beef and chicken plants are being forced to close, even for short periods of time, millions of pounds of meat will disappear from the supply chain.”

On Tuesday, President Trump said he plans to sign an executive order to ensure meat processing plants stay open during the coronavirus pandemic. His order will invoke the Defense Production Act and will deem the facilities part of the country’s critical infrastructure. The federal government will also supply additional personal protective gear to plant employees.

The order will include guidance from the Department of Labor intended to provide liability protections to companies.

At a press conference with small business owners, the president did not outline specifics of the order when asked, but said it would help ensure the American food supply is not disrupted by the COVID-19 crisis.

“We’re working with Tyson, which is one of the big companies in that world. And we always work with the farmers. There is plenty of supply,” he said, saying it is about distribution and “we will probably have that today solved.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For farmers and producers of meats and other foodstuffs who are suffering a loss in demand as hotels and restaurants have closed due to the pandemic.
  • That food safety will be maintained as processing plants reopen under the Defense Production Act.
  • For President Trump as he seeks ways to return the economy to a level of stability and growth.
